The military strategy and tactics employed in American Civil Warfare were revolutionized by the many developments and inventions made possible by advances in technology that were escalated by the desperate need of new weapons and new ideas. American Civil War Inventions and technology included many advances in weapons including the submarine, torpedoes, ironclads, mines, landmines, rifles and artillery. Communications between the battlefields were enhanced by telegraph and signaling systems. The transportation of troops and equipment was transformed by the railroad. Just a few examples of Civil War Inventions and technology directly relating to warfare.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th American President who served in office from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865. One of the effects of the Civil War were the new Inventions and technology especially in relation to warfare.

Civil War Technology: Hot Air Balloon
One of the most interesting developments in Civil War Inventions and Technology was the use of the Hot Air Balloon. Less than a week after the outbreak of the American Civil War made a flight on his hot air balloon and realized the potential of his Hot Air balloon in terms of aerial reconnaissance for the Union armies.
Professor Thaddeus Lowe persuaded the military that the use of these vehicles would be highly beneficial to the Union Army. President Lincoln was also impressed and created the U.S. Army Civilian Balloon Corps in June 1861. Both Union and Confederate forces   conducted aerial reconnaissance during the Civil War and it was used at the Battles of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gaines Mill, Seven Pines and Fredericksburg.

Innovations and new Technology changed the way the American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 10, 1865) was fought. There were military breakthroughs in technology some inventions used completely new ideas and discoveries, others applied new technology to older inventions which had not been fully industrialized.  New, groundbreaking weaponry, was developed and the Civil War Battlefield was the test bed for a range of technologies and weapons that transformed the nature of war and helped shape the Civil War conflict. The old saying "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" is true and the following list of "Firsts" were made necessary by the American Civil War. This terrible conflict cost no only the precious lives of young men but also brought an immense financial cost to the nation - refer to the Cost of the Civil War.

Under-water Mines were used to such an extent that they made the James River nearly impassable and were used to considerable effect during the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864

Civil War Inventions & Technology Fact 10Limelights inventions: Calcium floodlights, or 'limelights' were chemical lamps that used super-heated balls of lime (calcium oxide) to create an incandescent glow. Limelights were first used under the direction of General Quincy Adams Gillmore in 1863 at the of Fort Wagner. The 'limelights' were highly successful, illuminating artillery targets whilst simultaneously blinding Confederate riflemen.

Repeating rifles inventions: Breech loaded single-shot rifles were replaced in the early 1860s with repeating rifles that provided a much greater rate of fire. Repeating rifles were single barreled, containing multiple rounds of ammunition loaded from a magazine by means of either a manual or automatic mechanism.
